For the first time in 10 years, 20-year-old Xiaoxue is again walking with a straight back. A tumor has been eroding her spine, causing her back to bend nearly 180 degrees. The common treatment of spinal traction did not work on her, and surgery was necessary. Without it, she'll probably become paralyzed and run the risk of cardiac complications.
During the surgery, one of the anticipated high-risk situations indeed happened. The team of Shanghai Xinhua Hospital reacted quickly, safely finished the operation and saved Xiaoxue from the fate of complete paralysis. The surgery took seven hours.
Xiaoxue is now free of the wheelchair and is even 12 centimeters taller. She was discharged on Tuesday and will continue her rehab at home.
