Built in 1894, on the site of a hot spring with a history stretching back over a thousand years, Dōgo Onsen is the oldest bathhouse in Japan. While Dōgo is now hidden in the suburban sprawl of modern-day Matsuyama, the area around Dōgo retains the feeling of a resort town, with guests from all over the country wandering the streets in yukata robes around their baths. The Dōgo Onsen building inspired the bathhouse in the critically acclaimed Hayao Miyazaki film “Spirited Away” (千と千尋の神隠し), which won Best Animated Feature at the 2002 Academy Awards and Best Film at the 2002 Japan Academy Awards. In 2014, the Tytan Creates team was honored to make a film celebrating the building’s 120th anniversary.
