I had a day to fill and decided to check out what I could find in the Falkirk area to explore. In the end I found 2 very interesting places.
Firstly I found Birkhill Clay Mine (and the linked railway station). The buildings for the mine are all gone now, but the tunnels are still there. I think I was in the old tourist tunnel but it was pretty cool (and creepy) at the same time. Tours were given around the site until very recently.
Later I found Lathallan House. Lathallan House was a once opulent home, originally constructed in 1826 in the Tudor style, with touches of Scottish Baronial. Sadly, it has been neglected for a number of years, culminating in a recent fire. However, the building itself is still impressive, despite the sad state in which it currently sits.
Must go back to Falkirk! And I might have to find some other old mines.....and a better torch!
