Pressure is mounting on the Haitian prime minister to resign after a fresh wave of violence overran the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince, on Wednesday.
Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the US State Department, urged Ariel Henry “to expedite the transition to an empowered and inclusive governance structure that will move with urgency to help the country prepare for a multinational security support mission”.
While Miller insisted the US is “not pushing for [Henry] to resign”, his comments are still likely to add pressure on the prime minister amid a growing crisis where powerful gang leaders within the Caribbean country are demanding he step down.
