This Tom Snyder episode of 'Tomorrow' on "Quitting Smoking/Tobacco" airing on NBC in 1976 features Tom and guests on the dangers and habits of smoking and nicotine. Guests include hypnotist, Damon Reinbold, Jackie Rogers of Smokenders, and June Walzer, director of the Stop Smoking Program of the American Cancer Society's New York City division, and Clara Gouin, founder of Group Against Smoking Pollution (GASP), who started talking with friends about the ill effects of widespread public smoking. Snyder gained national fame as the host of Tomorrow with Tom Snyder (more commonly known as The Tomorrow Show), which aired late nights after The Tonight Show on NBC from 1973 to 1982. It was a talk show unlike the usual late-night fare, with Snyder, cigarette in hand, alternating between asking hard-hitting questions and offering personal observations that made the interview seem more like a conversation. Unique one-on-one exchanges were common to the program, notably with author Harlan Ellison, John Lydon of PiL and The Sex Pistols in 1980, John Lennon in 1975, actor and writer Sterling Hayden, Charles Manson, and author and philosopher Ayn Rand. A one-on-one program with David Brenner as the sole guest revealed that Snyder and Brenner worked together on several documentaries.
Founded in 1969 by Jacqueline Rogers, the Smokenders program has been taught in thousands of hotel and corporate meeting rooms around the world. From the 1970's through the 1990's the course was advertised and conducted in large cities across the U.S.
Tom Snyder (1936 - 2007) was an American pioneering television personality and figure in broadcast journalism who brought a no non-sense attitude to broadcast television news. He was best known for his late nigh talk shows Tomorrow (NBC) and The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder (CBS). His engaging style combined with his irascible attitude, made him one of the best known journalists of his time, back when having a nationally televised and thought provoking late night talk show actually meant something. It was a totally different time in television, as the news was delivered as information with no spin or opinion of the newsman. He marked the end of an era.
