A girl is born at a farm in South Carolina.
She will grow up to be regarded as one of the greatest and most influential actresses in her generation. But currently, she is the youngest of five children, and the farm is a former slave plantation with no running water or toilet.
Soon, the family moves to Central Falls, Rhode Island.
Her childhood is filled with many happy moments. But she is also growing up in immense shame. The girl sacrifices her childhood for food. She does everything for food. She steals, crawls in maggot-infested garbage bins. She becomes friends with children whose mothers have the opportunity to cook three meals per day.
She is one of the 17 millions kids in the country who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. When her family’s welfare check comes, the food is gone after two weeks.
They have to live in rat-infested and condemned apartments.
At the age of two, the girl is taken to jail with her mother who is arrested during a Civil Rights Movement protest.
Her father is an alcoholic and a domestic abuser.
When they first move to Central Falls, they are the only black family in town. The girl’s strongest memories up until 4th grade are those of her classmates yelling racist taunts at her and throwing sticks and bricks at her.
The girl will be a bedwetter until the age of 14. Often, the family won’t have the money for laundry.
But the girl wants a life bigger than that, from food in the refrigerator to exciting adventures.
She decides to pursue acting, something that she is very good at. After graduating from school, she studies at the Rhode Island College, majoring in theater, and then enrolls into the Juilliard School.
She starts her professional career with minor theater and film roles. The breakthrough comes in 2008, when her work in the drama Doubt earns rave reviews and several major nominations, including the Golden Globe and Academy Award.
Today, Viola Davis is the only black person to have achieved the Triple Crown of Acting (an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony). She is widely known for her roles in movies like The Help, Suicide Squad, and Fences. Of course, she is also everyone’s favourite lawyer Annalise Keating in the ABC television drama How to Get Away with Murder.
She is very open about her struggles growing up as a underprivileged black girl. She is using her influence to advocate for and support the Civil Rights Movement, equal rights for women and women of color, and more diversity in Hollywood.
Viola Davis is happy to prove that things do get better if you choose to march on through. And there is no shame in following your own destined path, even if in the beginning, it’s riddled by storms and thorns.
