Hi, welcome to Enchiridion.
Hidden amongst the moist Amazon rainforest in South America, lay mysterious animals waiting to be discovered by scientists and explorers. In fact, there are A LOT of creatures waiting to be discovered here, as it represents over half of the planet’s remaining rainforests, and comprises the largest and most biodiverse tract of tropical rainforest in the world, with an estimated 390 billion individual trees divided into 16,000 species.
Among the many creatures of the rainforest, there are many reported sightings of legendary creatures like a Giant Snake, Curupira, Kida Harara, Segamai, Jucucu, and Ujea, or the Mapinguari, a huge, monstrous beast. Forgotten by humanity for centuries, the Mapinguari legend has still remained alive nonetheless.
Today we’re going to talk about the Mapinguari in this episode of Cryptid Case. We’ll explore questions such as: What is the Mapinguari--including its depictions and appearance? What evidence do we have for it? What is the story behind this legend? Is it real? And what is the probability that a Ground Sloth or related species survived till today?
I’d first would like to say that descriptions vary and are vague, with some being described as a hairy humanoid cyclops while others claim it is similar to the Giant Ground Sloth, or Megatherium, which were endemic to South America and lived till around 12, 000 years ago and became extinct during the Quaternary extinction event. Mapinguari samples include “hair” and “droppings” collected by investigator David Oren, but these turned out to be the deposits of Giant Anteaters and the hair of small rodents. In one often-repeated sighting that occurred near Barra de Sao Manoel on the Tapajós River, a hunter named Manuel Vitorino Pinheiro dos Santos shot four peccaries before hearing the call of a Mapinguari. He fled to the river as the second call shook the trees themselves, and hid under the water.
The calls became muffled as the animal seemed to move deeper into the jungle, but Manuel remained hiding for hours. There have been numerous sightings of similar ape-like creatures in the Amazon that differ slightly, but all of them mention a humanoid-like beast said to inhabit the rainforest. In 2005, 2007, and 2014, numerous sightings were reported, with some describing it as a Ground Sloth while others the more primitive description of a one-eyed beast with a gaping mouth--the cyclopean Mapinguari, but these are all merely claims, with barely any claim having substantiated evidence, such as photos, videos, or other pieces of evidence which are more convincing.
And with that, thank you for watching, this is the end of the first episode of the two-part series on the Mapinguari and in the next episode, we’ll look at whether the Mapinguari is real, including theories, and which is the probability that Ground Sloths or other similar creatures survived till today.
This is Enchiridion, see you next time.
