This marks the third time that Guillermo has set a film of his during a real-life political conflict. Pinnochio is set during the 1930s Italy scene with Mussolini and the Socialist Fascist Party reigning. His other films, The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth, were set during and after the Spanish Civil War. What is surprising is the fact that Cate Blanchett wanted a role in the film so badly that she took the last character that hadn’t been cast yet. Cate voices Spazzatura who is a monkey, and she ended up having very few actual lines and spent most of the time making sounds for the character.
