(17 Feb 2014) Thick fog lingered over the mountains at the Sochi Olympics on Monday, forcing the postponement of a biathlon race and snowboard event until Tuesday.
The fog rolled in over the mountains in Krasnaya Polyana on Sunday night and showed no sign of dissipating by Monday afternoon.
That prompted organisers to call off the men's biathlon mass-start race and men's snowboardcross almost simultaneously.
The biathlon race, which had already been pushed back from Sunday evening, will now be held on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m (1130 GMT), organisers said.
Some spectators were not surprised at the disruption.
"You can understand why, with the weather, it would be quite dangerous, with the speeds and the airtime snowboarders get," said 26 year old Leo Beglet from Edinburgh, Scotland.
A news conference was held on Monday by the International Olympic Committee.
Mark Adams, the IOC spokesman said the fact that the only problem the games have had is fog was ironic and did not represent a disaster for the Sochi games.
"It seems to be that no event has been cancelled so far compared with previous games in Vancouver, previous games in Nagano and Sarajevo, previous games everywhere," he said.
A decision on the women's mass-start race still scheduled for its original 7 p.m. (1600 GMT) start was set to be made later on Monday.
