The ones who follow my channel longer know that I have a thing for fancast edits. Recently, I'm VERY into the stand-alone novels by Naomi Novik. Apparently, I found my new obsession - literature that includes elements from slavic fairy tales with badass heroines who end up with the villain (or the one they share a love-hate relationship with).
The only surprise is that I made a fancast for "Spinning Silver" before "Uprooted". But I just recently decided upon the actors I pick for "Uprooted" and so "Spinning Silver" was first. (Just to note: Don't let me even start with "Uprooted" here. I will tell you about all my feels in that upcoming edit. Believe me, once I start talking about Sarkan I NEVER stop. :DD)
What to know:
"Spinning Silver" is a book written by Naomi Novik. It is told through various POVs but Miryem is probably the closest one to call "main protagonist". Miryem Mandelstam was born into a Jewish family of moneyleaders. As her mother got sick, she decides to take over her father's business (her father was too kind than to demand the money others owed him) and brought back the money. Her actions caused her heart to get colder and one day she bragged with her skill to turn silver into gold. That remark, however, didn't go unnoticed. The Staryk are people of the white lands in a winter kingdom who fight and they desire gold the most. (Later it gets revealed that they NEED it to survive, without spoiling the issue.) The Staryk Lord/King arrives and demands of Miryem to turn silver into gold three times. She manages it through her business tactics and becomes the Queen. However, both are unhappy with the marriage which ends in a lot of bickering and included tries to get rid of the other. Miryem suceeds but realizes that she doomed all of the Staryk to die. Having found friends in the kingdom, she decides she wants to protect them and helps the King to win an upcoming war. In the end, they bound over their devotion to protect the people (and probably over their cunningness) and the Staryk King asks for her hand in marriage. For real and with a Jewish wedding.
I swear I sat on the edge of my seat the whole book with those two. They have such a wonderful dynamic but the first 80% they were just enemies (especially from Miryem's POV). So their talk before she freed him was so satisfying where they discussed everything and all the whys of what happened.
It's a beautiful book that also includes other strong women and shows friendship between them. There is also another couple for you (although, I'm not really invested in them since those two stole my heart xD) and the Staryk folk are so fascinating. I loved the setting with the glass mountain and their world and it just really felt like one of those slavic fairytales I used to read as a kid. :D
In this edit:
The frame story is Miryem hearing a tale about a girl who was gonna be killed by a king. I used the quote as slight Scheherazade-element and because the story was mentioned in the book as well. Miryem listens to Wanda telling her the story of it. In truth, it is the story of the Staryk King and Miryem.
It starts with Miryem already staying in the glass mountain. She wants to protect the human world of Staryk attacks but he blames her that her turning silver into gold caused the harsh winter (as it was in the novel). So they argue a lot over the destiny of the sunlit world and she tries to convince him not to fight them. In between, fear and attraction also get in the mix. With her abilitiy, the King also wants Miryem to stay close. Which causes her to think of his behavior as affection. When she speaks about it, he is anything than amused. Next, they banter over their talk about fighting Chernobog ("sun" is meant as reference to the fire demon that brings death upon the Staryk lands) and she presents him the chests filled with gold (this advantage is meant when he says "the heart of the mountain" - and, yes, I know I the timeline is actually kinda messed up xD). Later he comes back and assures her that there is nothing more she owes to them. Anyway, they do marry which results into some fluff for this angsty ship. :DD
