Hundreds of couples reenacted the Times Square kiss Friday to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.
The couples were kissing below the over 8-meter sculpture depicting the famous photograph of an anonymous U.S. sailor and a woman in white dress kissing euphorically upon hearing the Japanese surrender on Aug. 14, 1945.
"So this is a moment of joy, that's really about celebrating peace as much as the end of war. And how peace can be a joyful thing for people personally," said Tim Tompkins, president of Times Square Alliance who organized the activity.
Sailor hats and roses were giving out to the kissers who gathered on the square to commemorate the moment of victory.
"The joy brought by peace and love has been spread to the U.S. and the whole world. This is especially meaningful for us, a Chinese and a American who got married for love," said Cathay Colemon, a kisser on the square.
