I caught a Boeing 747 Dreamlifter for the first time! During our stay in North Carolina USA, me and Lars had planned a visit to Charleston. For me the goal was to try and catch one of the Dreamlifters and hopefully some other nice traffic at the airport. When I saw a Dreamlifter was due to arrive the decision to go to Charleston was made pretty quickly. Boeing has a factory at Charleston where their 787 Dreamliners are assembled and made ready for delivery. The Dreamlifter, a heavily modified 747-400 Freighter, is able to carry oversized airplane parts. The official designation is the 747-400LCF (Large Cargo Freighter). You could compare it with the Airbus A300 and A330 Beluga. Boeing has 4 of these interesting looking Queen's. They used to be normal 747-400 passenger planes, flying for China Airlines, Air China and Malaysia Airlines before they were converted to Dreamlifters. The Dreamlifter flights are operated by Atlas Air. The huge plane was specifically made to transport large parts of the Boeing 787. These parts are not only made in the US, but also in Japan and Italy. The Dreamlifter has a volume of 65,000 cubic feet, and it can hold three times that of a 747-400F freighter. The Dreamlifter I caught is N718BA. It came from Taranto, Italy, where big fuselage parts of the 787 are made by Alenia Aeronautica. If I'm honest, I need to say that I have seen a Dreamlifter before. But that was not at or near an airport. It was almost 10 years ago from my backgarden when one flew past on cruising altitude towards Italy. It wasn't exactly above me, you could barely see it on camera. So I don't count that one. I'm so happy to now have very good footage of 30 year old N718BA. This very plane was in the news not too long ago because on 11-10-2022 it lost a wheel on take off from Taranto and flew without it to Charleston.
Besides the special 747, I've filmed a bit more at Charleston Airport. First we have departures of an American A319 and a Delta Boeing 757-200. Later I stumbled upon four USMC F-18 Hornets which were parked up! Just in front of the Dreamlifter an Avelo Boeing 737-700 arrived. New airline for me! After the Dreamlifter we headed to a different location in Charleston. (More about that in the next video) But there we saw IFL Group Boeing 727 Freighter N216WE on approach to the airport! A bit unlucky timing wise but even though the distance was pretty far, I got a reasonable shot of it. You can even see the landinggear coming down! Enjoy the video!
This is the first video uploaded in 2023! Sadly I don't have a yearclip ready yet but as you probably have noticed I'm trying to upload all the remaining 2022 video's as fast as I can so that I can start making that aviation music video. Because what a year it has been! And you have not even seen all of my stuff from 2022 yet! So stay tuned! Happy 2023!
