STORYLINE
Colombian, Mexico and Central American leaders began a two-day summit Wednesday aimed at tackling the region's migration, drug trafficking and economic problems.
The leaders were also looking to expand regional integration agreements that have opened borders from Nicaragua to Guatemala and united economies from Panama to Mexico.
Before starting the summit in the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa, Mexican President Vicente Fox and his Honduran counterpart, Ricardo Maduro, inaugurated a new highway connecting Guatemala and Honduras, praising the project as an example of how the region must improve infrastructure and work together to compete globally against economic powerhouses like China.
Fox has long promoted the so-called Plan Puebla-Panama, designed to bring together economies from southern Mexico to Panama. While factories and industry are common in the cities of northern Mexico, the southern part of the country has struggled to develop under the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Maduro echoed that sentiment at the meeting's inauguration, saying: "We are stronger together than apart."
