Dr. Steven Hail, Economics Lecturer at the University of Adelaide, Australia compares the effectiveness of a stand-alone universal basic income (UBI) to a federal job guarantee (FJG). A FJG would offer employment at a living wage to anyone that wanted it, while serving the public purpose whereas the effects of a stand-alone UBI would be inflationary as supply would not be able to keep up with increased demand.
Furthermore, there are numerous areas of need that a FJG would address that aren't likely to be automated anytime soon. That is not to say that a UBI couldn't serve as a complement to a FJG for those who do not wish to participate, but overall a FJG would be superior to a stand-alone UBI as its effects would be far-less inflationary.
