The Punjab government recently requested the Interior Ministry to shut down internet services and social media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp from Muharram 6 to 11 to control the spread of hate material and misinformation and avoid sectarian violence. However, the federal government rejected this request, emphasizing enhanced security measures instead.
The Ministry of Interior has directed the suspension of mobile signals in areas where Muharram processions and gatherings are scheduled. Additionally, the Home Department requested the suspension of social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok, to maintain peace.
Cabinet Minister Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani highlighted the escalation of hate content on social media during Muharram, leading to sectarian tensions.
