Starting in the late 1800s, heroin was mass-produced by German pharmaceutical company Bayer, and marketed as a wonder drug. The drug’s branding would soon be exposed as a tissue of lies, and countries began to criminalise it. By the time regulations were enforced, however, heroin had already penetrated Western societies, leaving an evil that still escapes eradication.
