Thailand is famous for its transgender community called kathoey or ladyboys. Buddhism in Thailand, which considers transgender as a karmic result of previous lives, creates an attitude of sympathy and understanding in society. Travellers from all over the world are interested in getting to know this unique transgender community, boosting self-confidence among kathoey.
Although tolerance is high in major cities such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai, discrimination still occurs in other areas. The Thai government has yet to allow gender reassignment on identity cards, so ladyboys are still conscripted into the military. Many kathoey prefer to be called sao praphet song, which means "second kind of woman," as the term kathoey can be considered derogatory.
This video will explore the reasons behind the high number of transwomen in Thailand, the cultural and religious influences, and the realities they face.
