Chess Openings: Learn to Play the Sicilian Najdorf like Garry Kasparov - Sicilian Defense Theory
The Sicilian Najdorf has become one of the most popular variations in the Sicilian Defense. It offers a solid position with sound counterplay. It has been used by players such as Vladimir Kramnik, Veselin Topalov, Vassily Ivanchuk, Vasily Smyslov, Viswanathan Anand, Viktor Korchnoi, Judit Polgar, Bobby Fischer, Tigran Petrosian, Mikhail Tal, and yes, Garry Kasparov. It has also been utilized by modern players including Viswanathan Anand, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Wesley So, Magnus Carlsen, Ding Liren, Levon Aronian, Anish Giri, Alexander Grischuk, Peter Svidler, David Navara, Peter Leko, and many more. It has a proven track record throughout chess history, and has been a hard chess opening for white to counter.
This chess opening is well fit for the aggressive, attacking chess player. One cannot play the Sicilian Najdorf Defense without playing for the win. It's not an opening in which black can play quiet, positional chess while having any chance of surviving. It is an opening that requires a ton of opening theory, but can lead to amazing results. Garry Kasparov, in particular, used it nearly every tournament and match of his career, and was constantly finding success with it.
In this chess openings video, we will analyze two games by Garry Kasparov. One was against chess grandmaster Nigel Short, and the other is Anatoly Karpov. The game against Anatoly Karpov is arguably the most memorable game of Garry Kasparov's career. Anatoly Karpov had to win the game in order to retain the world chess champion title. However, Garry Kasparov, playing with the black pieces, went to a Sicilian Najdorf! As mentioned, the Najdorf is an attacking chess opening that can lead to many unbalanced positions. Garry Kasparov was never known for holding back on going for a draw. As many say, if you play for a draw, you will probably lose. Garry Kasparov understood this and played one of the most dangerous chess openings in the history of opening theory. The Sicilian Defense is far from passive, and Kasparov went on to win an amazing game, while becoming a world chess champion at 22, the youngest in history at that time!
Is Garry Kasparov the greatest player of all time? There were many great players including Magnus Carlsen, Viswanathan Anand, Bobby Fischer, Anatoly Karpov, Paul Morphy, and many more. Garry Kasparov made a profound impact on the game of chess, playing at a high level with longevity. Where is he on your list of the greatest chess players of all time?
