I can’t believe I’m typing this but… I wrote a cookbook! (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵)و Sesame, Soy, Spice is available to pre-order now.
If you had told a younger me that I would one day write about food, I would have never believed you. My relationship struggle with food started at age 7 and for the majority of my life, I feared food. It was the enemy and no more to me than just numbers, macros and calories.
To say that my eating disorder put a strain on my relationship with my family and my culture would be an understatement and while it may seem counterintuitive, it wasn’t until I made my foray into veganism that I slowly started to get sober, find my way back to myself and my mixed heritage.
This book is, in fact, a book about food but it is also a story about healing. Through the recipes, I share the story of how I started to become afraid of food after a move to Taiwan, how my Asian heritage and the respective cultural norms exacerbated my eating disorder, how I lost my cultural identity on my quest to eat only foods that the magazines deemed diet friendly, why cookies are so meaningful to me and eventually, how I found my way back home.
This book is for my family, both blood and chosen, who have taste tested a million iterations of every recipe in this book and tried their very best to transcribe our family recipes so that I could share them with you. All the recipes are vegan and gluten free, with influences from my Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese heritage and French and Brazilian family.
Big thank you to my publisher @harpercollins @williammorrowbooks ♡
