Around 230am, just 4 hours after my last video of the juveniles being hungry, a raccoon scared Momma off the nest and took the juveniles.
Sadly she returns to an empty nest at 515am (this video)... I think she knew there was trouble and that is why she didn't return immediately.
16:04 Daddy returns to feed. I watched him fly back and forth to the white fence and back up, seemingly confused.
At the very end of video you can hear a Norhern Flicker making a glassy call while he sings his normal song while on the white fence but the tone of it is sad. It get's extremely quite and he makes tuk tuk sound before flying off...
A few factors to consider, possibly contribute to the male being unfit to protect the nest.
2. Yesterday he visited the nest less than 40 times to feed and she visited almost 80 times plus sat on them.
3. He is either old, hurt, or lazy which caused female to potentially overwork
4. She was actually sleeping last night, with head resting on her shoulder, right before the attack. I have never seen her sleep and she wasn't prepared to make alert to call him in.
5. I had bad feeling about their fate a day ago because each time I went to the nest when she was off the nest (he doesn't sit), he came nearby and just looked at me and didn't try to attack or make any noises.
6. Finally, I left a bag of trash on top of my deck (normal habit) and it was ripped open same night. I have never seen a raccoon around here and my trash has never been ripped open like that but I should have been wiser knowing these critters lived beneath.
