As more states legalize marijuana, veterinary hospitals, including Schwarzman Animal Medical Center's 24/7 ER, are seeing a spike in cases of marijuana toxicity. Many of the cases are combined toxicities, in which the drug is mixed with chocolate or sweeteners like Xylitol—both of which are also toxic to dogs—in the form of brownies, cookies, and candy.
In this video, Dr. Carly Fox, Senior Veterinarian in AMC's Emergency & Critical Care Service, discusses combined toxicities, and why it’s important to be as detailed (and honest) as possible when describing the situation to your veterinarian. A dog who ate a marijuana brownie (a double toxicity because of the THC and chocolate) will need a different treatment than a dog who inhaled too much smoke.
