CHARLES BUKOWSKI (1920-1994)
Born Heinrich Karl Bukowski in Andernach, Prussia, Germany. His abusive father was American German, mother was German. Repeatedly claimed to be born out of wedlock but this was not the case. Educated at Los Angeles High School, Los Angeles City College (dropped out). While working blue collar jobs, Bukowski started to publish his work in the 1940s. Married Barbara Frye in 1955. Had a daughter, Marina, with girlfriend Frances Smith in 1964. Married Linda Lee Beighle in 1985. Despite being a prolific underground writer, Bukowski received little critical attention in the USA but was very popular in Europe. Bukowski's often autobiographical writing addresses the everyday concerns of poor Americans, the act of writing, alcohol, relationships with women, and the drudgery of work for the downtrodden. Died in 1994 in Los Angeles, USA; his gravestone reads: "Don't Try".
