Disulfiram like reaction is a process in the body that produces symptoms similar to those that occur when alcohol is consumed after taking disulfiram.
It is a food and drug interaction. Disulfiram is an oral drug used for treating alcoholism that causes unpleasant symptoms when alcohol is consumed.
Mechanism:
Under Normal Condition, alcohol is broken down in liver by enzyme called "alcohol dehydrogenase" to acetaldehyde, which then converted by an enzyme "acetaldehyde dehydrogenase" to harmless acetic acid.
Disulfiram block this reaction at intermediate stage by blocking enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase .
Disulfiram prevents acetaldehyde dehydrogenase from converting acetaldehyde into acetic acid, leading to a buildup of acetaldehyde levels in the blood which cause unpleasant symptoms after drinking alcohol.
Symptoms
* Headache,
* Low blood pressure (hypotension),
* severe flushing,
* palpitations, * nausea, * thirst, * chest pain
* Mental confusion and
* Circulatory collapse.
A "disulfiram-like" reaction occurs when any drug other than disulfiram produces the same effects when alcohol is consumed.
Examples of drugs that have been reported to produce disulfiram-like reactions include
* metronidazole ,
* sulfonamides
(trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole)
* some cephalosporins
* tinidazole
* chloramphenicol
* some antifungal like (griseofulvin)
