Located in gorgeous southwest Colorado, Gunnison is a charming small town with lots of history.
As a smaller community, Gunni, as the locals call it, is a very friendly place. The historic downtown is lined with unique shops, and plenty of places to grab a drink or a meal. And during the warmer months, there are lots of markets, events and parades.
With a deep history in ranching, Gunnison is home to Cattlemen's Days, the longest running rodeo in Colorado. And it’s also a college town, with the campus of Western College University sitting on the East side of the city. The Gunnison Airport is convenient and will connect you to the world, when you have to leave but don’t want to.
Much like Crested Butte to its north, Gunnison is recognized as a biking and walking community, with ample trails and parks to get into the great outdoors. A typical walk or bike ride will even usually lead to a wildlife sighting
Running right through town is the Gunnison River, which provides lots of fishing and rafting opportunities. And there are a variety of public access points to get you on the water quickly. Often you’ll even have entire stretches of the river to yourself.
On the north end of town is Ohio Creek valley, which is a popular and beautiful drive, especially during the fall.
Just to the south is the Hartman Rocks Recreation Area, which is an incredible place to visit for camping, off roading, and mountain biking.
And just west of town you’ll find even more spots to fish, where the Gunnison River eventually feeds into the Blue Mesa Reservoir.
Gunnison is a wonderful community with so much to offer the mountain enthusiast, but also those who prefer a more urban setting.
