How to make the #8.
This Cocktail is a part of a full week-long deep dive on Amaro and Amaro Cocktails.
We do our best at Alchemix to deliver the most accurate history possible within the murky and hazy realm of cocktail history. By and large, the reason why that is possible is because of the historical writings of David Wondrich, undoubtedly the best Cocktail Historian to ever live and one of the last great Journalists in any field.
At Alchemix, we consider both Punch and Imbibe mandatory reading for high-level bartenders and anybody interested in Cocktail History. Please consider buying the books through our affiliate links below in which we make a small commission. It’s a great way to support the show!

Barenjager
.5oz/15ml
Don Julio Reposado

The Alchemy,

The Lore,
Daniel Eun, a modern-day legend of Cocktail Creation and the first-ever Head Bartender at PDT in NYC invented this Cocktail in 2008 and named it after the legendary number of the late Kobe Bryant. It is also the number of months that Don Julio Reposado is aged.
The Era,
2008. Modern Cocktail Revolution.
The Geology,
PDT. LES, Manhattan, NY. “Please Don’t Tell.” The New York Speakeasy by Jim Meehan.
The Essence,
Has been likened to a Reposado Tequila Martini. Though it has more depth.
Alchemix Assessment,
The Honey Liqueur works well with the Amontillado Sherry with notes of Caramel and Nut. All acting as a vehicle for the Don Julio Reposado with just a hint of Orange Spice to open up the drink. Don Julio Reposado is an obvious choice in this Cocktail due to its rich flavor with hints of Vanilla and Caramel. Cannot be substituted for another Tequila. A well-balanced drink.
