Educational video describing the Danis - Weber Classification of Ankle Fractures.
The Danis Weber Classification is based on the level of fibular fracture. The more proximal fibular fracture indicates increased risk of syndesmotic disruption and ankle instability.
Type A
•Internal rotation and adduction injury
•Fracture of the fibula below the level of tibial plafond
•Usually an avulsion injury from supinaton of the foot
•May be associated with oblique or verticle medial malleolus fracture
•Syndemotic disruption is rare but can occur
Type B
•Oblique or spiral fracture of the fibula near or at the level of syndesmosis
•External rotation injury
•May be an associated injury to the medial structure or the posterior malleolus
•50% syndesmotic injury
Type C
•Abduction injury
•Fracture of the fibula above the level of syndesmosis
•Syndesmosis disruption always
•Associated medial injury; in almost all cases
•Includes Maisonneuve fracture pronation abduction or pronation external rotation
