Deborah Chan Deng and her 10 children have been living in a UN protection site for three years after fleeing violence when civil war erupted across South Sudan. In the wake of a new peace deal, the family has decided to leave the camp to go back home to Malakal in the Upper Nile region. Deborah is among more than 600,000 people either displaced within the country or living in refugee camps in neighbouring countries who have returned to South Sudan in the past year. Touching down on home turf in an UNMISS plane, Deborah and her children enjoyed an emotional reunion with family and friends they haven’t seen for years. They’re looking forward to making a fresh start where the children can go to school and they can rebuild their business to ensure their family enjoys a brighter and more prosperous future.
