Thousands of workers swarmed the streets of downtown Bologna to protest attacks on workers' rights by President Giorgia Meloni's far-right government. The annual inflation rate in Italy rose to 8.3% in April.
Meloni's government provocatively passed measures on International Workers Day making welfare cuts and scaling back the minimum income scheme. Michele Bulgarelli, Secretary of the Bologna Chamber of Labour threatened unions will "intensify the struggle" and "will go on strike" if the government won't meet demands.
The major Italian unions, such as the General Confederation of Labor and the Italian Confederation of Trades Unions, which represent millions of workers, helped organize the protests. The unions have also announced further protests in Milan and Naples later this month.
