EDIT- as of around November 8th, 2019 Apple has stopped signing IOS 6 for these devices, meaning that you can no longer install IOS 6 on these devices through ITunes. This also means that this tutorial, along with any other tutorial on doing this will no longer work. The only way to get IOS 6 is to jailbreak your iPhone, if you downgraded your iPhone/iPad while this method was working, consider yourself lucky.
