STORYLINE
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov was struck by an egg on Sunday as he prepared to cast his ballot in Russia's Duma (lower house of parliament) elections.
Kasyanov looked bemused as the egg hit his shoulder.
He shrugged off the incident telling reporters that "this is also an element of democracy".
Security officers detained a woman, reported to be in her twenties, as she shouted: "These elections are nothing but a farce!"
The Russian police would not confirm who was behind the incident, but a fringe leftist group is thought to be involved.
Members of the Russian National -Bolshevik Party are well-known for throwing eggs at domestic and foreign politicians as way of raising the group's profile.
