Originally, the opening of the shopping centre was estimated for April 12, 2012. 3 Later, Horst Paulmann reported that the company decided to postpone the inauguration of Costanera Center. On April 24, Paulmann confirmed a new opening date for the shopping centre, which was going to be May 27, 2012,4 but which was finally postponed again due to the fact that the mitigation works that had to be carried out so that the permission could be granted could not be concluded. It was expected that the shopping centre could finally be inaugurated on June 8, but again the mitigation works were not ready and with their receptions up to date.5 Finally, on June 12, 2012, the white march6 was authorized for the shopping centre and the 330 stores, starting at 3:30 p.m.7


Since its inauguration in 2012, the shopping centre has been the scene of several suicides and suicide attempts. Costanera Center's reaction to the suicides has been constantly criticized on social networks, as the stores continue to operate as usual while the corpse is covered with a tent while awaiting the required expert reports.121113 According to the communications department of Costanera Center, the shopping centre has security measures that are superior to the regulations to avoid this type of situation (for example, the height of the railings).14 In addition, since suicides began to be recorded, the company has closed access to other buildings in the complex.14
