Iran's naval chief has poured scorn on America for sending its aircraft carrier the USS Nimitz into the Persian Gulf. Speaking exclusively to WTN, Admiral Ali-Akbar Ahmadian said the arrival of the Nimitz and other American warships had not affected the Iran-Iraq war and had no effect on Iran's naval manoeuvres.
The Nimitz has been despatched to the Gulf ahead of schedule amid signs of increased tension in the region; Iranian planes have allegedly bombed opposition groups based inside Iraq, accusing Iraq of attempting to wage a covert war against Tehran, with both sides apparently violating the 'no-fly' zone in southern Iraq imposed after the Gulf War.
The Iranian Navy is currently conducting massive naval manouvres
codenamed Victory 8, to co-incide with the 8th anniversary of the Iran-Iraq war.
