Throwback Thursday - Termite Architecture
1991 Mick Pearce was given the job of building the biggest building in Harare at the time but without air conditioning.
This is a termite mound. Millions of termites live inside these structures some of which stretch an astonishing 30 ft.
Termites are able to maintain their mound at 87 degrees Fahrenheit even though the outside temperatures vary between 104 and 35 Fahrenheit.
This is done by controlling the moisture content under the nest and size of the vents above it.
Mike Pearce applied the same strategy. The Eastgate building uses 10% of the energy of a typical building its size.
Harare is 1600 ft above sea level and little cloud and humidity. But is it shows the potential for such an approach.
