STORYLINE:
Supporters and opponents of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez have been staging rallies in Caracas in the run-up to a recall referendum on his rule, which is set for this weekend.
In one incident on Wednesday, a group of masked pro-Chavez militants apparently tried to abduct a Spanish photographer identified as Edward Jimenez while he was taking pictures in Caracas.
The militants tried to force Jimenez onto the back of a motorcycle, but he apparently jumped off as it sped away.
Jimenez suffered minor injuries and is being treated at a health clinic.
Elsewhere in Caracas, the Democratic Coordinator, an organisation grouping political parties and civic groups that oppose Chavez, held a press conference on Wednesday with former foreign ministers in an attempt to unite anti-Chavez efforts for the recall vote.
To be recalled, more citizens must vote against Chavez than the nearly 3.8 million who re-elected him in 2000.
If Chavez is recalled, the standing vice president would take over and elections would be held within 30 days.
The winner of the elections would finish Chavez's term.
Chavez has vowed to run as a candidate in the subsequent elections, but the nation's high court has yet to rule on whether he can.
Polls show the country is split evenly between those for and against Chavez.
Supporters see him as a champion of the poor and a new hope after decades of corrupt governments, while opponents accuse him of seeking to install a communist dictatorship.
Chavez, who survived a short-lived coup in 2002, accuses Washington of backing alleged opposition plans to overthrow him.
