I thought I'd have a little fun with this video and compare a few mandolins I had at hand this evening. The instruments featured in the video are three VERY different A-style mandolins: my Eastman MD505, my daughter's Gretsch New Yorker, and a friend's 1917 Gibson A-4.
I tried as best as possible to keep the mandolins in the same position relative to the mic (Shure SM-81), and used the same pick for all three instruments (Blue Chip CT-55).
I realize it's not fair comparing a top-of-the-line vintage Gibson oval-hole mandolin with a couple of much more affordable modern f-hole mandolins. In my opinion the Gibson definitely shines, not only in how it sounds, but also in how it feels in the hands. However, my biggest takeaway is that all three mandolins sound good in their own unique way, which is great news for anyone looking to get started on the mandolin. It's comforting to know that decent-sounding and nice-playing instruments can be found at nearly all price points.
I'd love to hear your comments and thoughts. Which mandolin did you prefer and why?
