Tesla and Nio Have been head to head lately. Nio is often nicknamed "The Tesla of China". They make Stylish electrical vehicles and are pioneering in a country that has committed to 100% electrification by 2035. Nio is the preferred EV company by the Chinese company amongst all of the rest. But does it warrant the tittle "the tesla of china"? In this video I address the bold claim of Nio being the Tesla of china with a break down of Nio day and it's new sedan 5T7 as well as how it compares to Tesla.

I invest in both Tesla and Nio, so my opinion comes from a bit more unbiased position as I see potential in both. But I do need to address my disagreements in this video.

Let's Start with Nio Day and the largest take away, Nio's First Sedan Model the ET7

- Starting price 448,000 Yuan or $69,0000 USD - $74,000 USD on the premium trim.
-70 KWH Battery with the option to swap for a 150 KWH battery.
- If customers choose to have the ET7 without a battery, they are looking at a starting price of around $58,374 USD or (378,000 Yuan)
-Deliveries will start 2022

- The et7 claims a driving range of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles). But ITS NOT EPA its NEDC NOT EPA which is what tesla uses. NEDC always over estimates miles. When converted to EPA, this claim of 1,000 kilometers or 621 miles gets reduced to 434.26 Miles by dividing the NEDC value by 1.43 with an 11% error. (Which is still impressive but not as huge when comparing Apples to Apples.

The primary difference between European and U.S. standards is the emphasis on city versus highway driving phases in Europe. The EPA emphasizes highway driving since Americans spend more time on interstates, whether they are commuting to work or traveling long distances for recreational reasons. China being so large, should use the EPA system along side for better accuracy.

We heard about their Autonomous driving which will be powered by a new chip from NVIDIA which William Li the CEO of Nio himself claimed is 7 times better than tesla's in house chip.

I did some more research and and I found NVIDIA's DRIVE Orin that will be used on the Nio ET7 claims to have up to 254 Trillion Operations per second or (TOPS) and each vehicle will have 4 of these chips for a total of UP To around 1,000 TPS and will Begin Production in late 2022 (Q4)

(Telsa used to work with NVidia in the past and due to disagreements from Tesla and NVidia Elon musk decided to make a better chip in house back in the early days of tesla). In Tesla's Autonomy day, we learned that they are developing an upgraded version of this chip to offer 36 (TOPS) per chip and the FSD computer will be using 2 of them for a total of 72 (Trillion operations per second) But wait, there's more to consider. the higher the number of TPS, the more power is needed and the more heat is being generated. Computers and heat DO NOT MIX

Tesla's inhouse dual-chips can perform at using only 72 watts of power maintaining a smooth performance for it's capacity. Nvidia on the other hand said that their chips can scale down to entry-level ADAS/Level 2 use cases (10 TOPS/5 watts). So if they require a minimum of 5 watts per 10 TOPS then the total claim of 1,000 TOPS would be 100 times the power. Meaning this chip at it's peak will require a whapping 500 Watts just to operate as intended. This is insanely high for a computer chip that will be enclosed in a small environment that will need to be temperature controlled.
So, is Nio up to par with tesla?

I tend to disagree. if Tesla was just a car company, Nio could very well be "the tesla of China" However, lets go over a few facts that is often missed by the most analyst and general public.

Nio doesn't have it's own factory. This is one of the major advantages tesla has over nio that is often ignored. Tesla is becoming just as good as building cars cheaper, faster, safer, and more innovative because of their control of research and development on their own manufacturing.
