This video will explain the most typical cause of brake squeal and how you can avoid this problem with new brake pads. Brake pads vibrate during braking and the pad shims act as a vibration friction barrier between the caliper piston (inside pad) and the caliper ears that braces the outside pad. There are two shim designs: shims that are either riveted or glued to a brake pad and the other where brake lubricant (grease) is sandwiched between the shim and the pad. Riveted or glued shims have an outer anti friction coating to allow vibration between the caliper pistons and caliper ears. Greased shims, the most common design, allows vibration between the shim and the pads. Regardless of design, make sure your rotors are not out-of-round (have them either resurfaced or replaced) before installing new pads. This will reduce the vibration between the rotors and pads.
