The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is celebrating the arrival of their 35th baby gorilla! This is the first baby for the mom, Sue. Dad is Ktembe, and he has more experience. The baby was born on June 29th, and on July 8th guests had their first chance to see the baby.
Sue was born at the Lincoln Park Zoo on September 27, 2004. She has been at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium since 2014. Dad, Ktembe, was born at the Smithsonian's National Zoo on March 13, 1997. He arrived in Columbus in August of 2017.
Columbus is also famous for having the first Western Lowland Gorilla born in a zoo in the United States. That gorilla was a female named Colo. She was born in 1956, and lived until 2017. She reached the age of 60 years old, the oldest gorilla in a zoo at that time.

-In general, gorillas live 35 years in the wild. In captivity they get better food, medical care and have no predators. Life expectancy can range from 50-60 years.
GORILLA CONSERVATION - one of the easiest things you can do to help gorillas is to recycle your cell phone or other hand held electronic device. Recycling electronics helps support gorilla conservation programs. Cell phones and other electronics contain a mineral called coltan (it is short for columbite-tantalite). Coltan is mined in areas where gorillas live. Recycling cell phones reduces the demand for coltan, which helps protect these native habitats. Some estimates report gorilla populations have declined 25% in the past 20-25 years.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

And support your local zoo, by purchasing a zoo membership. They are great for families and help conservation efforts. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is one of over 230 zoos that is accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. To earn an AZA accreditation a zoo must keep their standards high to help ensure proper care and safety for people and animals. For more information, visit [ Ссылка ]
