Unfortunately most of us who live in modernized western society are breathing very poor and inefficient. Our poor breathing habits cause us to be more stressed, anxious, inflamed, unhealthy and just lowers our quality of life. When we breathe through our mouth and chest we are literally telling our whole system to fight or flight which turns off our bodies ability to heal, repair, fight sickness and even digest food.
The more efficient we breathe the more we will get out of our energy, our selves, and our lives. By re learning how to breathe through our nose and diaphragm (stomach) we will instantly become more calm, relaxed and present in our daily lives. Breathing through our nose activates our digestive system as well as our bodies ability to fight sickness, heal and repair.
By consciously practicing breathing efficiently we will naturally breathe much more efficient when we are breathing unconsciously.
A few practices we can do to improve our breathing efficiency:
1) Lay on back or sitting put one hand on your stomach and one on your chest. Set a timer for at least 3 minutes with mouth closed begin breathing while attempting to only raise the hand on your stomach. For many this can seem difficult and almost impossible to do but if you stick with it and be patient you will get this! Recommended is every single day for 3-10 minutes until you can breathe through stomach at will.
2) Breath holds: Holding our breath and building a tolerance to a build up of carbon dioxide will actually have our body producing more red blood cells which help our bodies efficiency to transfer oxygen into our muscles and organs. Set a timer for 5-15 minutes and every minute hold breath for as long as you can pushing your comfort zone. Don't push it so far to need to open your mouth to catch your breath. Be able to catch breath with mouth staying closed.
