Teardrop Quads and Your Aesthetic
The vastus medialis is perhaps the most desired quad muscle we want to beef up because it looks great when developed.
A strong focus on hip dominant exercises such as deadlifts, and knee dominant exercises such as the back squat, don't always put enough stimuli on the vastus medialis to carve out those great teardrops because most of these exercises develop the muscle mass higher up in the legs around the thigh and glute region. While these compound exercises are essential, from an aesthetic standpoint, though, it's imperative to incorporate some isolation exercises into your leg training!
The best approach to developing the vastus medialis is leg extension using the leg extension machine. Do not let your legs go past 90 degrees at the bottom; although this does create a greater range of motion and won't necessarily hurt you right away, it can cause future knee problems. It is important to remember if you do not go to full extension at the top, this can result in weakness of the vastus medialis which only fully contracts in the last few degrees of the movement. Imbalances of these quadriceps muscles can lead to abnormal tracking of the patella (knee cap), which can result in knee pain.
Please consult your PT before starting any exercise program.
