Join us for a serene summer morning walk as we explore the picturesque bridges and side streets surrounding the Anavros stream in Volos, Greece. The Anavros river, a torrent near the ancient city of Iolkos (modern-day Volos), flows from mount Pelion into the Pagasetic gulf. Myth has it that the hero Jason lost a sandal in its waters while ferrying the disguised goddess Hera across the stream. Today, the riverbed holds water only when it rains, as its springs in mount Pelion are diverted to meet the water needs of Volos and for agricultural purposes.
We begin our walk at the iconic Centaurus sculpture, located at the eastern roundabout entrance of Volos. Centaurs, creatures of Greek mythology, symbolize the intense weather phenomena observed in the region, with myth placing them in the magical land of Pelion.
Next, we follow the side pathways of the Anavros stream, enjoying the beautiful pine trees along the way. Every few hundred meters, we encounter metallic bridges connecting the Nea Demetriada neighbourhood with the main city of Volos. We also explore some charming side streets on both sides of the Anavros stream, discovering hidden gems and local architecture.
Our walk concludes at Anavros beach, where the stream flows into the sea. Here, we catch a glimpse of the impressive cruise ship 'Marella Discovery,' which arrived in Volos this morning.
