Western and Japanese bees take different approaches to giant hornets.
Western bees take an offensive approach taking the hornet head on.
Japanese bees tend to take a defensive approach and wait out the hornet.
The entrance of the hive is narrow and made of metal, so the hornet cannot enter.
If a giant hornet does manage to get inside the hive, the Japanese bees will swarm the hornet forming a bee ball.
They kill the hornet not by stinging but by vibrating their flight muscles to increase the temperature.
In addition, the exertion of the honey bees raises the level of carbon dioxide(CO2) in the ball of bees resulting in the death of the hornet.
