Here's a demo / playthrough / review of the Digitech "The Drop" Polyphonic Drop Tune Pedal. This thing is stupidly fun! Makes your riffs instantly heavier? Just add water! No, don't add water. Bad idea.

Drop tuning is one of those things that us metal guys just love to do. It started with dropping a single string down a step to give us Drop D tuning, but that wasn’t nearly enough. I understand that a riff may sound cool in Drop D, but imagine how heavy it would sound another step down in Drop C. Better yet, just imagine how brutal it would sound even 4 steps lower in Drop A. The power of the riff would be unstoppable.
The problem for guitarists is that drop tuning comes with a price. Lighter gauges at lower tunings leads to flabby strings, which in turn leads to awful tone. Lower tunings require heavier gauge strings. But not only do heavier gauge strings feel different under your fingers, but they also increase the neck tension which may require a guitar setup. This is a royal pain in general, let alone in a live setting. The only alternative is to have multiple guitars for each tuning. However buying multiple guitars is expensive, not to mention it means having to carry even more gear to a live show on top of your (presumably) 120-watt head and over-sized cab.
Wouldn’t it be great to be able to instantly to drop lower tunings using the same guitar, with the same strings, and the same setup with just the tap of a button? DigiTech certainly thinks so, and so enter the DigiTech Polyphonic Drop Tune Pitch-Shift Pedal commonly known as “The Drop”. While DigiTech aren’t the first company with the idea, they’re the first company to do it right.
