A few years ago I began writing daily exercises for one of my recorder students.
My idea was to furnish the student with a series of daily exercises, working on a specific problem in recorder technique each week.
I believe it is extremely useful to concentrate each day on a specific aspect of playing the recorder: portato, staccato, legato (both continuous and pair-wise or other groupings), gradual increase in speed, regular and irregular rhythms (alternating long and short notes), and finally, playing from memory.
The idea of “daily exercises” is flexible: it is unnecessary to change exercises every day.
Appended to the studies are my 24 preludes in all the major and minor keys. I feel it is very important for a recorder player to be able to play in all tonalities.
