Colorado Grand Prix meeting. Shaun Wallace (UK) & Connie Paraskevin (USA) set new records.
Shaun Wallace of Britain and the American Connie Paraskevin were the latest riders to break world records at the Grand Prix meeting at Colorado Springs on Saturday and Sunday (6-7/7). First the British rider clocked 59.50 off a flying start for 1,000 metres, on Saturday, the second day of the men's competition. Until then, most success had come from East Germany and the host nation. On Thursday (4/7) Lutz Hesslich of East Germany had broken the world record for the 200 metres sprint, clocking 10.19 seconds only three minutes after American Mark Gorski had set a world record of 10.314. Gorski said later that he expected Hesslich, the 1980 Olympic champion in the event and three times world champion, to break his time.
On Sunday American woman cyclist Connie Paraskevin joined the record breaking, setting a mark of 11.39 seconds for the 200 metres off a flying start.
