cyclic AMP (cAMP) acts as an important secondary messenger producing number of physiological functions. Yet it can act quite oppositely at heart and smooth muscle. At heart it produces contraction while at smooth muscle relaxation. Surprisingly both quite opposite actions of cAMP are mediated by adrenergic system.
