The dragon in the Gringotts' vaults was trained to expect pain when the goblins rang their Clankers. This form of learning is called operant conditioning, sometimes referred to as instrumental conditioning, a form of reinforcement learning that involves using rewards or punishment to modify behavior. In this case, the reinforcement was in the form of a punishment, that of receiving pain when hearing the sound, causing the dragon to retreat and allow those who were using the Clankers to access the vaults
