In this video I start to make the missing components for horizontal milling, starting with the support bar. When I acquired this machine it was missing both the 2.5in diameter support bar and the arbour support bracket. Although I don't envisage regularly using the horizontal milling capability I decided early on that it would be good to restore that aspect of the machine.
New steel stock was expensive so I found a second hand bar of suitable length - the pillar from an old pillar drill. Although it was advertised as steel it turned out to be cast iron but I don't think that matters in this case.
I had previously made a large fixed steady for my Myford lathe enabling me to tackle this oversized job. In this video I prepare the bar for turning and face it to length. Parting the 2.75in diameter x 30in long bar in my little Myford was far easier than I had anticipated. To ensure a square cut I realised that it would have been better to take a roughing parting cut followed by a light facing cut prior to completing the parting operation - a lesson for next time!
