In this episode I connect with Daniel Sundahl. Daniel has over twenty years of experience as a Firefighter and a Paramedic in Alberta. Daniel courageously shares his journey into the trauma he endured and the impacts it was having on his health, personal and professional life. As Daniel began to build awareness into his mental health and his own suffering he found a healthy coping mechanism through art and artwork.
What started as an idea to help express himself quickly grew to being largely popular and accepted by many as profound artwork. Daniel now is a common name in the art community and it has opened doors for him to explore helping others through public speaking opportunities and other avenues of connecting with community leaders as we try to improve supports for first responders.
In this episode Daniel reflects on the pain and suffering he observed and found to be profoundly impactful: the human suffering that others experience when they experience loss or grief. Next of kins are incredibly difficult and impactful moments for first responders. Often times many first responders can be negatively impacted by these experiences.
Daniel also reflects on his own growth and how he rebuilt his own value system during a crucial stage of healing - Post Traumatic Growth.
