When Lake Victoria was drained in 1994, the discovery of numerous cultural artifacts and sites of cultural importance where discovered. Middens, scar trees, shelters, grinding stones, tools and burial sites where identified and Lake Victoria was acknowledged as being a significant place of aboriginal cultural heritage. The ongoing protection and identification of these cultural sites for future generations is a collaborative effort between the Lake Victoria operations team and the Barkindji- Maraura Elders Council.
